The recap:
24+ hours of driving
Dozens of waterfalls
Countless sheep
Day 1
Arrived in Reykjavik at the Keflavik airport, picked up the rental car and drove approx. 1.5 hours south.
Lesson #1: Get the 4×4. Yes it’s more expensive, and we survived with a 2WD, but you can’t access any of the ‘F’ roads in Iceland without a 4×4 and even some of the non-F roads can be rough on cars with low ground clearance.
Accommodation highlight: Checked into the most uniquely amazing accommodation I’ve ever stayed at – Camp Boutique. Picture luxe tents with heated blankets on the beds, a renovated barn space to relax in, and the most gracious hosts.

Tip: Don’t forget to bring an eye mask to sleep during the 20+ hours of sunlight each day in the summertime, and a windbreaker as it gets quite windy!
Day 2
Drove The Golden Circle – approx. 1 hour drive from Camp Boutique to Thingvellir National Park.
The highlights:

Day 3
Road trip day – approx. 8 hours to Egilsstadir on the east coast of Iceland.
Highlights along the way:

Must-do: Glacier Lagoon (as pictured above)
Checked into cabin at Stora Sandfell in Egilstaddir.
Went for dinner & drinks at Askur Pizzeria & Brewery, really the only option in the small town, but a great one!
Day 4
The road trip continues to the north of Iceland.
Stop along the way: Studlagil Canyon

Checked into cabin at Ytri Vik in Akureyri. Had the local cod & chips at Baccala Bar. Gorgeous views in the area:

Day 5
The day of hot springs & relaxation:

Myvatan Nature Baths – chose this experience over the Blue Lagoon per a friend’s recommendation:

Day 6
The last leg of the road trip to Rejkjavik, approx. 5 hours.
Checked into Hotel Fron in downtown Rejkjavik.
Went for the most amazing dinner at Apotek – splurged & ordered the tasting menu, with no regrets!

Day 7
Morning walking tour of downtown Rejkjavik.

Then back to the Keflavik airport to return the rental car & catch the flight home.
Thanks to all who provided recommendations for a great Icelandic adventure!
